System redundancy is essential in the process industry or for infrastructure facilities as the systems must be maintained even in the event of a failure.
Any interruption of a continuous production process – regardless of the company – can lead to major financial problems or even endanger people. For this reason, these areas place special requirements on the system controls and field devices.
High system availability thanks to Type 8652 with PROFINET system redundancy S2
If a machine, system or system control fails, the company incurs high costs due to the downtime and the associated loss of production.
Therefore, the valve island Type 8652 is available with both PROFINET media redundancy protocol (MRP) and system redundancy S2.
PROFINET S2 in combination with the media redundancy protocol (MRP) solves two critical problems: the loss of device communication (left) and the failure of the programmable logic controller (PLC) (right).
Avoidance of complete failures in the event of a technical fault on a single device thanks to the media redundancy protocol (MRP)
If a communication connection of Type 8652 is interrupted (e.g. due to a cable break），the valve island is supplied by the additional cable via an alternative communication path. Failures due to cable breaks at field or device level can therefore be avoided.
However, this function does not protect against downtime if the programmable logic controller (PLC) fails.
PROFINET system redundancy S2 prevents complete failures in the event of a technical fault in a system controller
Type 8652 can now be connected to two system controllers simultaneously thanks to the corresponding PROFINET interface. If a PLC fails or requires maintenance, the second PROFINET network is used for data exchange without interruption.
This ensures system availability through redundant communication at control level too. Less system downtime means more production, so every minute can be utilised efficiently for your production.
